Frequently asked questions
What artists ask first.
Which devices does NextTat support?
LiDAR is required. That means iPhone 12 Pro / 12 Pro Max and any newer
Pro model (13 Pro / Pro Max, 14 Pro / Pro Max, 15 Pro / Pro Max, 16 Pro /
Pro Max), and iPad Pro models from 2020 onward. The app will not install
on devices without LiDAR.
How accurate is a NextTat scan?
Target accuracy is roughly ±0.5 mm at 30 cm for cooperative skin
under typical studio lighting. Accuracy degrades with distance, very
reflective or oily skin, and dense hair. The app surfaces a confidence
estimate after each reconstruction and will recommend a re-scan if it
isn’t sure. Do not use NextTat measurements for clinical or
medical purposes without independent verification.
What about hair, oil, sweat, and freshly tattooed skin?
Hair and oil reduce LiDAR signal quality — the scanner does best on
clean, dry, low-hair surfaces. We surface a real-time quality indicator so
you know whether the current capture is usable. Freshly tattooed or healing
skin can scan, but raised swelling will shift the geometry from healed
state — rescan after healing for final positioning work.
What lighting does the scan need?
Even, diffuse studio lighting is ideal. Avoid strong directional spotlights
that create deep shadows or specular hotspots on skin. The LiDAR signal
itself doesn’t depend on visible light, but the photogrammetry pass
does — and good lighting helps both signals fuse cleanly.
Do my scans get uploaded to your servers?
No. Camera frames, LiDAR depth, and reconstructed 3D body geometry stay on
your device. Export happens through your share sheet (AirDrop, Files, Mail,
third-party apps you choose). We do not have access to your captures unless
you explicitly send one to support. Your client’s body is their data.
Can the client see the preview on their own device?
Yes. Export the scan + design as a USDZ file and send it to the client.
Recent iPhones, iPads, and Macs open USDZ natively (no app required) and
render it in AR Quick Look so the client can rotate the 3D preview on their
own screen and see the tattoo on their own body.
What design formats does NextTat import?
SVG, PNG, JPG, and PSD. Layered PSDs preserve their layer structure so you
can manipulate fine-line and micro-realism work independently. Brush
character is preserved on import.
Does NextTat replace stencils?
No. Think of NextTat as the step before stencils: it tells you
where the design should sit, how it will wrap, and what the client can
expect, so the stencil-on-skin moment is confirmation rather than guesswork.
Stencil workflow is unchanged.
